For years I’ve been plagued by the hubby’s DVD collection. I mean I love a good movie just like the next person. But at the end of the day, I don’t want to see DVD’s cluttering the view in our living space. It’s just tacky! So today I’m showing you how Wayfair helped me to keep the peace with the Hubbs while adding some much-needed spring color to our apartment living space. *This post is sponsored by Wayfair, all personality and opinions are 100% my own.
Let me share the before pics so you can get an idea of how things looked and why it needed to change. We’ve had this media shelf for years. It’s like the guest that never leaves. When you sit in the living room, it was such a huge eyesore and hard to miss. We were running out of room for storage and using the shelf as a catch-all for books, PS4 games, old VHS tapes, and photos. This shelf was making me really not like our living room at all! I was tired of it taking up prime real estate, so it was time for it to either go or to be repurposed.
I’m also not a huge fan of this lamp anymore. It’s cute and functional but doesn’t really go with the space anymore.
New Spring Furniture
To refresh our room, I hopped over to Wayfair.com and started looking for a media cabinet that would add a nice splash of color and be large enough to hold all of the DVD collection. I found this fabulous Tierney 6 Door Accent Chest in Mint. Then I picked out this Spoon Intersecting Cubes Shelf in White.
The very first thing I did was to start assembling the new storage cabinet & shelf I picked out, once they arrived from Wayfair. Shipping was super fast too btw. I knew the storage chest would probably take some time to assemble, so I needed to get this done and out-of-the-way.
My least favorite part of home projects is the chaos before the transformation. But, decluttering is one of the necessary things we must do to help simplify our spaces.
I started decluttering by removing everything that was sitting on top of the DVD shelf and then I removed all of the DVD’s and set them aside into piles. The Hubbs had his collection organized in a way that only made sense to him lol, so I made sure, for the sake of our marriage, to leave them in the order he had them.
Storage and Organization
After assembling and putting the new furniture pieces in place I moved the DVD’s to the cabinet. Then I found new homes for some of the other items that I no longer wanted in the living room. I also ended up throwing out the old DVD shelf and some old movies that we no longer watch.
This cabinet is just the right size to store all of the things away that I don’t want to see, without taking up a lot of space in the room. Each section is deep enough to hold 2 rows of DVD’s. What I really like about it is the gorgeous color! I don’t mind being distracted by this when I’m in the room. It’s also super functional. The doors are easy to open and close and it provides a space for me to decorate or store things. Like my spring inspired photo album collection that was overlooked at the bottom of our old shelf. I can’t believe I got this as a wedding gift almost 18 years ago!
This Patina Vie Iron Wire Bread Basket is not only chic but functional. It’s the perfect accent piece for storing books and magazines we have lying around. I even use it to hold our remote controls.
In addition to a new media cabinet, I decided to add a multi-functional wall shelf so I could display a few smaller accent pieces. This Spoon Intersecting Cubes Shelf was so easy to put together and mount. It went from box to wall in about 15 minutes! It comes with all of the hardware & instructions so you can position this horizontally or vertically without having to mess with re-drilling/screws.
Don’t you love all of the little compartments of this shelf? I can add smaller items & decor pieces. It’ll be easy to switch out items as the seasons change too.
Finding the perfect items to style a living space isn’t always easy. To keep it simple, I like to repurpose a lot of things I have around the house first and then fill in with newer items that I gather while shopping in-store on online. I repurposed this red bowl and filled it with a houseplant from another plant pot in the house.
Then, I added some inexpensive decor pieces I found at a local discount store, to the wall shelf. It’s a great spot for adding candles, plants and little things that inspire you. One of my dreams is to vacation in Paris, so I added a little Eiffel Tower to one section.
I really love my new furniture and decor! Now when I come into the room I feel calm & peaceful. It’s amazing what a little decluttering and redecorating can do to make you feel better.
My next project will be tackling the lighting here and in my home studio area on the other side of the room. I need a new floor lamp for this space and I’m thinking a set of smaller lamps will do, for the music space.
