Bold color is nothing to shy away from.  If we’ve learned anything from famous brown-skinned beauties like Lupita Nyong’o, Viola Davis, Kerry Washington and Iman is that color, color, color looks great on brown skin tones.  From the lightest of lights to the darkest of darks, women are no longer afraid to step out with color.  I know for so long it had been a faux pas in the black community to wear anything other than darker/warmer shades of color in our makeup palettes.  Blue eyeshadow was a big no-no, but times have changed my friends.  Color is our friend and we need to make sure that we remain bosom buddies with a full spectrum of shades from now on,  because the contrast works great with our skin!

So for all of you wanting to dive into the world of matte lipstick here’s a great tutorial on how to apply matte lipstick. Then you can check out a gallery of women with a variety of brown skin tones rocking all types of shades.  I hope this gives you lots of inspiration!

Beauty Tutorial: How To Apply Matte Lipstick

Step 1 – Prep Your Lips

Make sure you start out with a smooth surface by exfoliating your lips.  Matte lipsticks are not forgiving when it comes to chapped lips. You can either buy a commercial lip exfoliator or make your own with a few simple ingredients.  A quick brush with a toothbrush & honey will also do the trick. Here I’m simply using a couple pinches of Brown Sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of Canola Oil.  Just wet your lips and rub this mixture on both lips with your fingertips for about 30 seconds. Make sure to get the corners of your mouth and your lip line as well. Rinse with warm water. Pat dry.

Step 2 – Moisturize

You need a really good base to seal in moisture and prevent future dryness.   Apply a light coating of your favorite lip balm.

My balm of choice is Dollar General’s Lip Balm in Grape…Yum!

Step 3 – Use a lip primer

If you want your lip color to last longer then you should use a good lip primer. Primer keeps your lipstick from gathering into the cracks on your lips.  It can also provide a more smooth and neutral background to keep colors vivid and closer to their intended shade.

Here I’m using e.l.f.’s Lip Primer.   Now this is the point where I put on my foundation and finishing powder.  I like to dust a little powder on the borders of my lips before I do the next step.

Step 4 – Use a lip liner *optional*

For a continuous and perfect edge to your pout, use a lip liner in a matching or darker shade. A lip liner is essential for those with thinner lips or beauties that have issues with color bleeding,  But in general, lip liners help to create that perfect finished look or add a little depth to your pout.

I’m using a translucent lip liner here because I couldn’t find my favorite purple NYX lip pencil.  I’m pretty sure it’s hiding out in one of my purses but I didn’t have time to do an extensive search.  It’ll show up eventually. I hope.

Step 5 – Use a lip brush

Apply your lipstick with a lip brush vs. straight from the stick.  A lip brush allows you to be precise in your coverage without disturbing your lip line. It also gives you the option to reapply without a cakey look.

Because of my addiction to vaseline on my lips, I always feel like my lips look/feel ashy with matte lipstick. I love the look but I’m so used to my lips being juicy…LOL!!! But I’ll have to try your tips and see if I can find my MAC lipbrush!
