It’s protective style season and many of those gorgeous styles are going to require maximum moisture and the ultimate holding power.  So I whipped up a quick and easy DIY Hair Pudding recipe to keep your tresses moisturized and those styles in check.

Key West Shea Butter

This recipe is simple, only has 3 ingredients and can end up saving you lots of moolah this season.  All you need is a little prep time and an airtight container to store your pudding.  This particular recipe will give you moisture filled, flexible hold.  I promise you, absolutely no tackiness or crispy, freeze-dried strands lol.   Just stick to the recipe below and you’ll be all right.

Shea Butter Hair Pudding Recipe

  • 1/2 Cup   Eco Styler Hair Gel (Crystal Clear)
  • 1/4 Cup   Shea Butter
  • 2 Tbsp  Your Favorite Hair Oil

Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl and use a hand blender or electric whisk to blend the ingredients well until it reaches a smooth pudding-like consistency.   Store your hair pudding in an airtight container and keep it in a cool, dry place. This makes about 8 oz of pudding.

I tried a few quick hair sets to show you the results after using the hair pudding on dry natural hair.  Oh and I did spritz the flat twist section with a light mist of water before applying the pudding & styling. With all sets, I allowed my hair to simply air dry.

This curl was set with magnetic rollers and a dime sized amount of the hair pudding.

I created a random flat twist. I basically just coiled it up at the ends and secured it with a bobby pin until dry to show you the holding power.

Product Info

Let me tell you a little bit about Key West’s organic unrefined African Shea Butter.  First of all, it is certified organic by the USDA.   It’s harvested from a Women’s co-op in Ghana, where the women receive fair wages and are treated ethically.  It’s unscented, and it’s white!

Key West Unrefined Organic Shea Butter

Did you know that unrefined shea butter can be either white or yellow?  For so long I lived under the myth that African Shea Butter has to be yellow to be considered authentic.    Then later on, I was schooled that…Uh, Uh…it has to be white to be considered authentic and that the yellow color is added after processing.    Two myths I no longer live by.

I now understand that what makes shea butter pure/not pure is how it’s processed and where it comes from.

Some other key points about the product.

  • Cruelty Free
  • Paraben Free
  • FDA Compliant
  • Responsibly Sourced
  • BPA Free Container
  • 100% Money Back Guarantee

Observations

What I really like about this particular brand of shea butter is the consistency.   It looks like it’s poured into the jars during processing so it comes pressed down in the jar, which makes scooping easy.  Normally I buy shea butter wholesale and packaged in huge clumps, so I have to break pieces off by hand.   But with Key West’s Shea Butter, I can use measuring tools to scoop out just the amount that I need.

I love that it comes in an airtight container that I can easily stack when storing away.  Not only is Key West’s Organic Unrefined Shea Butter affordable, but I can easily purchase it from Amazon.

Grade

Unlike a lot of wholesale product that I’ve purchased in the past, I love that everything is spelled out and upfront with this brand.  I love that the people who harvest the Shea nuts are fairly compensated and that the brand stands behind their product.   I’m particularly pleased with the consistency of the butter and how easily scoopable it is straight from the jar.  It’s cost-effective.  Since a little goes a long way with Shea Butter, I know this jar will last me quite a long time and I can created many recipes from just 1 jar.  So given the flexibility of uses, the cost and responsible sourcing and manufacturing practices, I give this one an A

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. All opinions are 100% my own and honest. Although the product may be sponsored…my opinion…NEVER!

If you end up trying the hair pudding recipe, stop back by and give it a rating!

I have never heard of this brand before. I always mix my eco styler gel (brown) with a pudding and my hair always comes out great. I need to check out Key West. Thanks for the review! #ProductReviewParty
