Before there was “All the Single Ladies”, there was Dorothy Dandridge. She was an American Actress born Dorothy Jean Dandridge on November 9, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. She died September 8, 1965 at the age of 42 from a prescription drug overdose in West Hollywood, CA. She was a Vocalist, Dancer and Actress on Film, TV and Stage from 1932 to 1962.

Dorothy was the first of only 9 African Americans to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Some of her most famous roles are Carmen Jones (one of my favorites btw), where she played the sultry Carmen opposite Harry Belafonte. She starred in Porgy & Bess, Tarzan’s Peril,  Island in the Sun and many more.

She lived through a time where racism & prejudice were both rampant & blatant.  Even though she was a star, she still faced having to use “white only” facilities & even denied access to a swimming pool in Vegas at one point in her career.

In 1999, a biopic of her life & career, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, aired on TV. Her life portrayed on screen by actress, Halle Berry.

There will never be another Dorothy. Her contributions have paved the way for many young African American entertainers of today.  Her talent, beauty, style & grace will always be remembered through her footage & remarkable photos.
