One of the hottest trends for Fall is Black & White. This week’s Moody Manicure is right on time & features a fun & funky combination of Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips in Black/White Checkered Pattern, Sinful Colors Professional Polish in Black on Black & White nail art paint.
I’ve been eyeing Sally Hansen’s Strips for a while but never really wanted to shell out the dough for something I wasn’t too sure about. I read a couple of online reviews & watched a few YouTube videos of people trying them out. It looked simple enough.
One of the things that really stood out to me were the claims that these can last pretty long. One online reviewer said her’s lasted a total of 9 days and she took a photo each day to prove it.
So, after weighing all of the pros & cons… and finding some on sale at my local Target for $2.56 😀 I decided to snag a box.
Here’s what is included in the box:
Now, one issue I do have with the instructions given with these is that they tell you to lightly rough up the nail surface before application, so the strip can adhere better.
Since I started polishing my nails regularly, I’ve become such an advocate for nail “health” & retention. I don’t believe in excessive filing or buffing of the nail surface unless it’s absolutely necessary. Too much of this, coupled with the polish removers we tend to use & cold temps, can lead to thinning, brittleness, dryness & splitting. That is why I always opt to use a base coat for added protection from harsh chemicals in some polishes, easier polish removal and to retain as much conditioning between my nails & the polish layer as much as I can.
You can achieve this by simply using a base coat with added conditioners before applying your strips. The base coat is tacky enough to help the strips adhere.
I used Sally Hansen’s Double Duty Base & Top Coat (one of my favorites)
Another one with added conditioners you should give a try is Nutra Nail’s Base Coat & Ridge Filler with Green Tea Extract.
Here are my before & after photos – applying the polish strips:
A few tips about using these:
- If your nails are already short in length, cut your polish strips to size & keep the remainder so you can maximize usage. You should be able to get 2 manicures out of 1 box.
- *For some designs* Leftover strips can be used for future nail art. Example, cutting your leftover pieces into shapes to use later with another manicure. (I’m going to use my leftovers as nail tips for a faux french mani)
What I did to make this Mani my own
The checkered design right out of the box was really nice, but I wanted to make this Mani my own by adding a little more character to it. I spent some time making sure each nail is unique. I added Sinful Colors Black on Black to each nail using different strokes with the taping method. Next, I added white nail art paint to my left hand only, stroked along some of the edges.
Overall, I am very happy with the Polish Strips. The application was pretty easy, they look great… and if these things really do last 9 days, you’ll probably see a LOT more of my Moody Manicures featuring Sally Hansen Strips.
Until next time, Mani Lovers, Keep Shining!
Oh and P.S. Target normally has a bunch of the strips on sale. Many cute Fall Colors & Designs! Tip: Look in the clearance bins at the ends of the beauty aisles for a lot of great finds, or get these Limited Edition Strips right now in my Star Shop for $5.49!
