February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. It’s a great time for us parents and caregivers to remember to schedule dental appointments and learn about ways to keep our kid’s happy and healthy. Today I’m sharing what my 2019 health & wellness goals are as a parent and info about free services that you can get for you and your kids this month.

Good Dental Hygiene for Kids

I’m sure most of us are aware that good dental health and habits for kids are very important, right? But I’m gonna be completely transparent here.  Oftentimes when dealing with my kids and all their daily needs, dental hygiene can fall to the bottom of the list of “stuff” to remember.  Sometimes I might forget to tell my son to brush before bed or he’ll simply go in the bathroom and play in the toothpaste, all while NOT brushing his teeth.  So either me or the hubby will have to stand there and supervise.  So annoying! But oftentimes, if we don’t do this it won’t get done.

Then there are times when I forget to brush my daughter’s teeth after breakfast & sometimes before bed. Blame it on my mama brain, not my heart.

My son had to learn the hard way last year that not staying on top of his teeth leads to unpleasant things like uncomfortable dentist appointments & side eyes from his dental hygienist.  We keep telling him it’s not a game. At 10 years old, and after years of parental supervision, he should have this routine down. However, he often chooses to do the quick brush vs. paying attention to brushing properly.

2019 Parenting Goals – My Kids Health & Wellness

One of my parenting goals this year is to stay on top of both of my children’s overall health & wellness.  This means paying closer attention to the little things like their oral hygiene, having better bedtime habits (bathroom breaks, quiet time/book time etc.) and scheduling all doctor’s appointments ahead of time.  This includes dental appointments, primary care checkups, and specialists.  Since speech therapy and vision specialists are also a big piece of my daughter’s overall health plan.

Kid’s Dental Health Tips For Parents

Here are some quick tips to help us busy parents stay on top of our kid’s oral hygiene.

  1. Set a regular routine for brushing teeth morning and night.
  2. Make sure kid’s brush for at least 1 minute.
  3. Replace toothbrushes every 2 to 3 months.
  4. For preschoolers, brush their teeth while they watch you do it. Teach them to spit the toothpaste out and rinse their mouths after brushing.
  5. For older kids, inspect their teeth after brushing to make sure they aren’t missing areas.
  6. Visit the dentist every 6 months.

For those of us parents that may be struggling with the costs of healthcare, there are still some good options out there for the uninsured and underinsured.  Most low-cost clinics operate on a sliding fee scale. Meaning, you can get services based on your household income and/or for free based on if your household income falls below the federal poverty level.

For many clinics, your income must be below 200% of FPL (ie. In 2018, this would be $50,200 for a family of 4) to qualify for free services.  So, your out of pocket costs can be greatly reduced if you take advantage of the various programs & clinics where you live.
