The news just dropped that starting May 2017, Nashville International Airport (BNA) will begin non-stop flights, 2x’s per week to Calgary, Alberta, Canada courtesy of WestJet airlines. This is great news! So here’s a list of some fun things going on in Calgary this year, so you can grab your girls and start booking those flights early. The tickets are CHEAP!

Arts and Cultural Fests

Sled Island Festival – Has been voted one of the Top 10 music festivals in Canada.  It’s a five-day independent music and arts festival held at over 35 venues throughout Sled Island. The festival gets over 30,000 attendees with about 250 bands, filmmakers, comedians and artists. Calgary Reggae Festival – ReggaeFest is a 2 day festival that features live performances from Canadian and International reggae artists.  Besides great music, you can also experience the food and culture of the Caribbean. Jubilations Dinner Theater – you can grab tickets to a performance at Jubilations, tickets are $69.95 (Sun, Wed, Thurs) and $79.95 (Fri & Sat) for adults, $35.25 for kids 12 and under.  Prices include a 3 act musical comedy, four course meal and refillable coffee and tea.  Alcohol, soda, taxes and tips not included.

For those of you that adore indoor malls and shopping centers, The CORE, Crossiron Mills and CF Chinook Centre are the places to go. If you love specialty foods and farmer’s markets, then the Calgary Farmers Market and Italian Centre Shop are for you.  17th Ave also has a lot of unique boutiques for those looking for a little something different.

Attractions

Glacier Skywalk – Get a 360 degree view of beautiful skies, gorgeous mountains, glaciers and wildlife all while walking on a glass floor over 919 feet up from the Sunwapta Valley, in the Canadian Rockies. Tickets are $32/adult and $16 for kids 6 – 15, kids 5 and under are FREE. Calaway Park – If you’re looking for a great family theme park that offers gluten-free foods and healthy salads in addition to traditional fair food, this is the place for you.  This park is located just west of Calgary with rides and attractions for everyone in the fam. Food & Wine

Dine 600 feet above the middle of Downtown at Sky 360. You’ll have spectacular views of the city, prairies and Canadian Rockies as you enjoy some delicious dishes and wines. National gives you 4 dining options in its restaurants scattered throughout the city. You can bowl at the 10 Ave location or enjoy great music on 17th St. Family friendliness awaits at the Stewart Green SW location or take in the beer garden and amusing games at the 8th St. location.

I know many of us stay on the hunt for late night meals too, so be sure to check out the award-winning Silver Dragon in Chinatown, Oak Tree Tavern in Kensington or grab a delicious hot dog, taco or burger to-go from Tubby Dog. I hear some of the toppings can get a little crazy, so don’t let that scare you, they still have traditional toppings for the non-adventurous.

Nightlife

Central 899 at Le Germain Hotel in Downtown Calgary is for those that prefer a chic lounge atmosphere to have some nighttime fun.  You’ll find the lounge at lobby level in the hotel. Here you can get cocktails and old world spirits. Grab some champagne by the flute or try out some local lagers and ales. There’s also small plate options if you want to grab a bite.

Wanna experience a cowboy saloon complete with cowboy hats, big belt buckles and bulls? Check out the Ranchman’s Cookhouse and Dancehall

Commonwealth Bar & Stage is a popular night club that has been created from a converted warehouse.  It has 2 floors of sound and a variety of live acts lined up to satisfy music lovers.

17th Ave Retail and Entertainment District has plenty of nightlife. There are sports bars, pubs and late night eats. Ricardo’s Hideaway is a unique Rum bar and then there’s Frenchie’s for all of you Wine-O’s.
