As someone who works from home, I know how important it is to have a nice designated space to clear your mind and stay productive.  My current home office consists of me using my dining room table as a desk.   Part of my problem is that I’ve made my home office set up a low priority, when it should have been at the top of my list.  I’m done talking about it and complaining about it.  I’m finally going to get the office space I need in my tiny apartment and I’m doing everything myself.

DIY Home Office Space for Small Apartments | Naturally Stellar

From the initial design to budgeting and purchasing, it’s gonna be all me.  This won’t be the first nor the last home design project for me this fall & winter, so I decided to start a series of posts showing you my home office space updates and final reveal.   Then I’ll be filling you in on my other projects which will include a dining area update, redesigning my son’s room and paring down/remodeling my bedroom, which the hubby and currently I share with our 1-year-old.

We have a lot of work that needs to be done in our home, especially before family starts coming for visits and the holidays roll around. But I’m at the point now where I’m tired of dreaming or making excuses about my home office. It’s a necessity and I need to get it done.

So to start off, I’ve taken a few pics of the area in my home where my new office will be, so you can see what’s there now and what’s gonna change.

Creating Home Office Space In A Small Apartment

My current space is undefined. It has a mix of items that really don’t flow together. I normally use this space to record my YouTube videos and my family stores our DVD’s here. It’s not used for much else.

I plan on removing everything here and updating the space to work as a small home office and backdrop for my live/recorded videos.

First Steps To Designing My Home Office

Next I went on a search for some good and FREE design software or an app that I can use to help me design my new space, even down to the details.  I managed to find a great “Top 10 List” that you can check out.  If you’re like me and are looking to make some changes in your space, this is a great list to help you find the perfect home design program that fits your needs.

I made a quick list of furniture and decor that I’ll need to buy. The great news is I won’t need to paint my walls or build anything, unless you count putting furniture together as “building” lol.

So the look that I’m going with for my new home office space is Contemporary, Chic and Luxe.  I want to use White, Chrome and Glass as my base color and textures.  Here’s a quick list of furniture and decor I’ll be buying to update this space.

  • L Shaped Desk – (preferably glass top with chrome accents or legs.  If not, white/glass or white/chrome)
  • File Cabinet (white)
  • Area Rug – modern design with white or white shag
  • Desk Chair – white leather with chrome
  • Office Decor
  • Wall Decor

I also started a Pinterest board to gather my decor ideas.  I’ll share that in my next post.

Home Office Space Design

Here’s the software I’m using to design my new space. It’s called Planner 5D.  It is free, but you have to pay if you want the premium features.

The size of the space I’m working with is 5.853 ft  x 4.5 ft.   It’s not a lot of space. But seeing that I currently have zero ft. of office space,  I won’t complain lol.   Here’s a pretty basic peek at what I’m trying to accomplish.  I have an open floor plan, so this diagram is focused only on my living room area.  You can also click on the 3D button (on the right side of the diagram),to give you a better perspective.   Whenever you switch to 3D, the software is a little off as far as colors, textures and what I selected in my 2D design.  Not sure why that is. But for my purposes it doesn’t matter.

Do you have any home projects or other DIY’s going on this fall/winter?

I’m glad you like my tips. Yeah we need to have our own space to help keep the creative juices flowing and keep us focused.
