Wig wearers, I totally understand the addiction. Fall is approaching and I am all about that wig life.  If you’re new to wigs or are searching for ways to maintain healthy natural hair underneath your wigs, then this is the post for you.

Over the last few months I’ve gone through what seems like the last of my postpartum shedding, which has left me with thin areas in some parts of my hair and shorter edges in the front now.

I decided to become a wig wearer, after years, in an attempt to give my hair a bit of a break from styling and the elements.  This Nashville heat has been brutal on my natural hair this summer.  I started back on a strict daily biotin regimen and have been drinking a lot more water.  Regular deep conditioning treatments and cornrowing my hair is another thing that I’ve been doing the last few weeks and it seems to be making a big difference for me.

My Wash Day Routine For Wig Wearers

To make sure I maintain a health scalp while underneath my wigs, I do scalp treatments.  This ORS Shealicious conditioning treatment really helps with dry, itchy and flaky scalp.  I’m making sure to keep these on hand as the weather gets colder.

So, this is a typical wash day blowout and cornrow style that I wear under my wigs.

I choose to do vertical cornrows mainly because the wigs I wear don’t have visible parts and are simply curly wigs. No special braid pattern is necessary.   I’m finding it to be really easy to maintain my hair under my wigs because all I’m doing is my typical wash day routine followed by a light blow dry and quick braids. This is basically what I do as part of my regular wash and prep routine.

  • I wash with a conditioning shampoo
  • Use a deep conditioning treatment or my regular ORS Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner
  • I apply a leave-in while damp
  • Next, I seal with my favorite oil and add thermal protectant
  • Light blow dry
  • Apply an oil moisturizer and braid
  • I then pin my hair to hide the ends under my wigs

Putting my wig on and taking it off is so fast and simple. I don’t know why I ever stopped rocking wigs. These things are a life saver!

All I do is care for my wig as instructed, keep it clean and conditioned and make sure to wrap my hair up good at night. It’s a pretty simple routine and I’m so glad that I made the switch to wigs for a while.  I really wish I had done it sooner.

Outre Big Beautiful Hair

This is one of my favorite wigs right now. It’s a synthetic curly textured lacefront and part of the Big Beautiful Hair line by Outre. It comes in a variety of colors and curly textures and blends so well with my natural hairline. I get so many compliments on this style and the color.  It feels really light when it’s on and looks so natural, no one will believe it’s a wig.  Seriously, I have fooled family members that thought this was my natural hair and strangers don’t know the difference.

So just to recap here are a few tips for maintaining healthy natural hair underneath your favorite wigs

  • Conditioning treatments are crucial
  • Braid with low tension on your cornrows
  • Simple vertical braids are all you need for partless curly lacefronts
  • If wearing a curly lacefront, be sure to leave out some hair around your edges, to blend in with your wigs hairline.
  • Follow the care instructions for your particular wig and wash/condition it on a regular basis
  • Protect your hair at night by wrapping with a satin scarf or use a satin pillowcase
  • Never sleep in your wigs

Until next time Stars, keep those natural tresses healthy and happy!
