Citrus fruit slices

My momma taught me this and I’ve been doing it for years.  Always save your leftover citrus peels for an easy stove-top potpourri.

All you need:

  • Any Citrus Peels – The amount doesn’t matter
  • Cinnamon
  • Water
  • Sauce pan or small pot

Put your peels, Cinnamon and water in the pot and boil over Med-High Heat.  Pretty soon the aroma will start to fill the house.   No Citrus Peels?  That’s ok, simple Cinnamon & Water works just as well.

The thing I like most about this potpourri compared to using store-bought odor sprays is, its good for the environment. A great Green way to eliminate odors. The citrus/cinnamon aroma really penetrates the fabrics of your home, like your curtains, cushions, pillows & carpets so the smell tends to linger a lot longer.  Plus, citrus tends to neutralize really bad odors like fish, fried foods and the trash you rarely take out in time.  I don’t have pets, so I can’t vouch for whether or not it neutralizes pet odor, but I’m sure it can’t hurt. Another added bonus is, you get your own homemade humidifier!  The steam from the pot is great for keeping moisture in the air during the dry winter months.

So the next time that stinky clothes hamper, diaper genie or last nights fried fish fest invades the air quality of your place, just throw these quick ingredients on the stove and  call it a day.

  Tips:

  • When your water begins to evaporate or you notice it’s gone, just pour in some more.
  • If you’re a composter – just dump the peels in your compost bin after use.
  • If you do this first thing in the morning, you’ll come home to a fresh smelling house at the end of a long day.

I was about to warn the composters not to compost citrus. But after a little search it seems to be an urban myth..

Great tip learned something today! Thanks,
